A multi layered work, this painting calls to mind the semiologist Umberto Eco: ‘what is this?’ ‘Do you like it?’ What does it mean?’ The intrigue is never ending. Simply described, we are confronted by a large foot hovering over several sexualised figures and a flying Cupid.
As if winged love angels, nudes, hands, feet/clouds are not enough, a small, superimposed trompe l’oeil illustration of a framed mirror is pasted in the lower right. Somehow, with compositional dexterity, Francine Scialom Greenblatt skilfully establishes control over potential visual overload.
As the title suggests, a scene of disparate traditions, resonating with saccharine sweetness could be overbearing. With redemptive panache however, the artifice of representation, painterliness and seemingly incomprehensible iconography symphonically synthesise, resisting all syrupy suggestions.
