BRUNFELSIA: YESTERDAY-TODAY-TOMORROW
This inaugural exhibition marks a moment in time both conceptually and physically for Francine Scialom Greenblatt.
Taking on board the fact that the current experience of a gallery visit is a simulacrum to which we have been forced to adapt, she has chosen to introduce 23 paintings, highlighting concerns of the last five years, to a world linked as never before.
The practice of Francine Scialom Greenblatt celebrates the eroticised figure. For her, sexuality manages to link the exterior part of nature to the most ulterior part of the mind and distance of the spirit. For FSG eroticism is seen as a libidinal, creative life force which denies Death. As definitions of love, sex or pornography are culturally constructed, the relationship between eroticism and pornography is fluid and difficult to categorise. Whether fetishizing aspects of the body, juxtaposing irrational symbols or abstracting spaces with lashes of colour, she manages to upend many taboos.
Social media has commodified and distorted the body establishing new ethical norms and shifting paradigms. With this in mind, FSG refrained from painting the figure for a long period of time, replacing the idea of lovers entwining, with links interconnected on one hand, and rectilinear abstractions on the other. These avatars continued her desire to give material form to unearthly predispositions.
Inviting the viewer on a journey through her mind, this body of work, part documentary, part fantasy opens a glimpse into personal diaristic musings. The hope that the familiar energy and dynamism that fuels her work will still resonate with acoustic and tactile exuberance in the virtual experience, is an experiment that is still unknown. Certainly, the advantages of effortless, frequent online viewing will make the oeuvre more familiar, facilitating dialogue and new intimacies. This exhibition invites audiences to voyeuristically engage with a particular Auteur-voyeur, as she reminds us that the nude is a timeless, universal construct, a bearer of meaning compelling us in our common humanity.
